HomeNewsBlogMEDIA RELEASE: PTCBR WELCOME START OF LIGHT RAIL WORKS APPROVAL

The Public Transport Association of Canberra (PTCBR) have welcomed today’s announcement that the long-delayed Works Approval for Light Rail Stage 2A has been released for public consultation by the National Capital Authority (NCA).

“After numerous delays resulting from COVID-19 and negotiations with the NCA, it is fantastic to see this city-shaping project reach such an important milestone,” said PTCBR Chair Ryan Hemsley.

“Extending light rail around London Circuit to Commonwealth Park is the first step towards extending the network south to Woden, which Canberrans have been waiting patiently for since it was first announced in September 2016.”

“The faster Light Rail Stage 2A is approved, the faster we can deliver the benefits of light rail to Woden, Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Molonglo, Fyshwick, the Airport and beyond.”

Mr Hemsley said there was strong community support for light rail, as evidenced by successive ACT election results and rebounding patronage following the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“Canberrans have consistently shown their support for light rail, both at the ballot box and with their MyWay cards.”

The works approval for Light Rail Stage 2A will be on the NCA website for community consultation until 11 May 2023. Mr Hemsley encouraged all interested Canberrans to have their say.
