The Public Transport Association of Canberra (PTCBR) has called on the re-elected ACT Labor Government to act swiftly on its promises to promote safe journeys on public transport.

PTCBR Chair Ryan Hemsley said that bus passengers and drivers had every right to feel safe when using Canberra’s bus network.

“If Canberra’s bus drivers don’t feel safe, neither do passengers. If passengers don’t feel safe, they won’t use public transport,” said Mr Hemsley.

“Transport Canberra must take immediate, concrete steps to curb anti-social behaviour.”

Mr Hemsley said it was critical that the ACT Government used all tools at its disposal to avoid a repeat of today’s unprotected industrial action by bus drivers, which has caused significant disruption for public transport users.

“At a minimum, the government must move quickly to recruit its promised team of dedicated transport officers for bus services and interchanges, and to review the ACT’s transport laws to ensure these staff are empowered to do their job effectively,” said Mr Hemsley.

“Anything less than this is a broken election promise.”

Ryan Hemsley is the Chair of the Public Transport Association of Canberra, a public transport users group committed to improving public transport in the ACT and surrounding region.
