It’s budget time! The Public Transport Association of Canberra (PTCBR) is pleased to share our submission to the ACT Government’s public consultation round on what should be funded in financial year 2025-26.
This year we have focused on things that are small-to-medium scale in terms of cost and complexity, things that will enhance everyone’s day-to-day experience using public transport, and things that we think will help to boost ridership by making our bus network more accessible and attractive.
You can look at our previous budget submissions to see our calls for large scope items like increased bus and light rail frequency, more light rail planning, better linkages between public and active transport, and much more. This year’s submission is centred on highly specific things that can be achieved in a relatively short time frame to offer immediate benefits for passengers. We don’t think these things are a big ask – and we hope the ACT Government agrees and chooses to take our suggestions on board.
Our eight recommendations are:
- Deliver new passenger information displays at bus platforms and interchanges.
- Replace or modify all bus stop flag signs to remove misleading and outdated information.
- Fund bus stop upgrades for stops that have insufficient seating and shelter.
- Fund a program to clean and refresh bus interchanges.
- Undertake feasibility work for bus priority measures in known problem areas.
- Provide printed maps and timetables.
- Allocate sufficient funding to complete the Belconnen Transitway.
- Improve cross-border public transport ticketing.
